Motorists travelling the Thurles to Nenagh Road (R498), are being asked to take care, following a serious road traffic accident, earlier this afternoon.
The accident has occurred near Thurles Racecourse, and directly opposite Stakelums Racecourse Retail Park, on the outskirts of Thurles.
Gardaí together with members of Thurles Fire Brigade and two Ambulance vehicles are presently attending at the scene.
One lane of the roadway is fully blocked, on the Racecourse side, resulting in traffic being slowed down and directed by Gardaí and members of the fire brigade.
Actual details of the accident and any injuries arising, have not yet been established.
Motorists are being asked to be careful when travelling on the R639 between Horse & Jockey and Littleton as a large tree has been blown down, courtesy of Storm Ophelia, blocking the roadway.
This news comes as we also learn that a male has been killed in a chainsaw accident, while attempting to clear a fallen tree, in south Co. Tipperary.
The man, aged in his early 30s, was gravely injured while attempting to clear a fallen tree at Ballybrado, Cahir, Co. Tipperary, at around 12.30pm this afternoon.
His body has since been removed to Clonmel Hospital, Co. Tipperary.
Woe betide those who park illegally in Thurles on Sunday next, while attending the County Finals in Semple Stadium.
Gardaí have issued a stern warning to all motorists that the “Book will come out”, and fines will issue for any “blatant abandonmenness” of mechanically propelled vehicles.
The immediate area around Semple Stadium hosts a heavy residential population and motorists are therefore reminded to take this into consideration when deciding where to park.
This warning comes about following a series of meetings between Semple Stadium management, the Gardaí and members of the Templemore Thurles Municipal District Council. Those attending highlighted a series of reported incidents, brought about during recent club games. Rights of way were closed off with vehicles double parking and blocking private entrances, which could have led to the restriction of Emergency Medical and Fire Services.
A male, aged 44 years, the driver of a motor vehicle, has been killed when he accidentally collided with a concrete column here in South Co Tipperary.
The only occupant of the motor vehicle, who has as yet has not been named, collided with the concrete structure just after 3.00pm yesterday afternoon, as he was travelling southbound, past Junction 7, on the M8 motorway, in the town-land of Ballyknock, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.
The driver was later pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where a post-mortem will take place today.
The roadway which later reopened, was closed for a time yesterday, as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out a thorough investigation.
However, Gardaí are still appealing for anyone who may have knowledge regarding the incident, to contact them at Cashel Garda Station, Tel: (062) 75840, or the Garda Confidential Telephone Line Tel: 1800 666 111, or indeed any Garda station.

Yesterday evening, unlike Tipperary Council, Cork City Council again voted not to vary the basic rate of Local Property Tax (LPT), following a special meeting.
Sixteen of the twenty six County Councillors assembled, who clench voter authority to alter the basic rate of LPT for their administrative area, (by minus or plus 15% of the basic rate set by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government), voted not to alter their current basic rate.
Photographed against the sunshine this morning; (note the surface tyre tracks) just a small section of the road surface on the junction of Slievenamon Road and Clongour Road, Thurles, obviously deemed acceptable by Tipperary Co, Council management and public representatives in their consideration of the tax fleeced motorists, pedestrians and cyclists of Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Photo: G. Willoughby.
Back in 2015 and 2016 Cork City Councillors had also agreed to apply a 10% reduction, but in 2017 a similar decision to yesterdays was also concluded, leaving €777,000 available in the council’s budget, for the fiscal year 2018.
Here in Thurles, for almost two years, promises to resurface the seriously deteriorated Slievenamon Road area of the town; together with stretches of its pavement, continue to fall on deaf ears; with County Councillors elected to the Templemore / Thurles Municipal District displaying little or no ability to stimulate those responsible to undertake this work.
This is the same pre-election, non required and never used ‘Cycle Way / Route’ promoted and introduced in 2015, by the former Tipperary Labour government Minister, Mr Alan Kelly. Today we seriously challenge any cyclist to attempt to cross from Slievenamon Road to the Clongour Road, in its present horrendous condition.
The government fork out millions of tax payers money on promoting, annually, Road Health and Safety issues, but when it comes to rural road surfacing; the grossly over taxed motorist in Tipperary, (through tax on Fuel, NCT costs, Road Tax, Vat, Motorway Tolls etc) is forced to drive on rugged terrain more akin to the physical confines of a river flood plane.
One is reminded of a past quote from Martin Luther King, Jr., which I relate to our Tipperary elected public representatives. The quote reads; “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
