Fatal Road Accident On Thurles / Dundrum Road

A young man, aged 24 years; named locally as Mr Sean Breen, has sadly died and two passengers, (also aged in their 20’s), have been injured in a single vehicle accident on the Thurles road (R661) about 1km from the village of Dundrum, here in Co Tipperary.

The three men were understood to have been travelling in a jeep, when their vehicle spun out of control, leaving the road to plough into a ditch.

The accident happened at about 5.30am; with the injured passengers removed by ambulance to South Tipperary General Hospital. Same, thankfully, are not believed to be suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The body of the young man, who was pronounced dead at the accident scene, was also brought to South Tipperary General Hospital.

Gardaí are now anxious to speak with anyone who travelled on the road around the time of the crash and those with information are asked to contact Tipperary Garda Station at Tel: 062-80670 or to contact the Garda Confidential Line atTel: 1800 666 111.

This death now brings to 7, in total, the number of persons who have lost their lives on Tipperary roads so far in 2019.

When Is Thurles Town Getting Its Ring Road?

The voting booths have just closed here in Thurles, as I write this article. It would appear that there was a reasonable turn out of the voting public; democratically deciding on three ballot papers, (1) Local Election Thurles Area, (2) European Election Ireland South and (3) The Referendum on Divorce.

But how many voters raised issues on the doorstep and how many hopeful election candidates actually called to speak with their electorate in person?

How many people sought answers as to when the long-promised Ring Road will be delivered and when will the traffic issues in the town be sorted out by competent personnel?

We raised the issue of large vehicles attempting to corner our junctions, while staying in their own lanes on numerous occasions in the past; most recently on December 5th, 2018 last. Same issues have cost two people their lives, in the recent past.

Less than 6 months since December last and earlier this month, new protective railings replaced at the Slievenamon Road junction with Liberty Square, have once again been ripped out of the pavement. This has happened as a result once again of large vehicles attempting to manipulate our Victorian street-scape, not to mention attempting to negotiate the poorly designed, notional traffic calming, introduced by naïve Tipperary Co. Council engineers.

Perhaps the time has come for yet another protest march in Thurles, in an effort to Save Our Square? Time now for Thurles Chamber of Commerce who claim to be advancing business, and the newly elected Templemore / Thurles Municipal District Representatives yet to be confirmed, to work together to demonstrate their real ability.

A Sixth Person Killed In Tipperary Road Accident.

A 59 year old man has died following a traffic accident in Co. Tipperary. This latest fatality will bring to six in total; the number persons who have lost their lives on Tipperary roads so far this year.

The head-on collision between two cars happened in an area known as Reddan’s Walk, on the R661 between Dundrum village and Tipperary town, shortly after midday.

The dead man, a driver of one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, latter a male understood to be in his 50’s, and a 5-year-old boy travelling in the other car, were both taken to University Hospital Limerick, where their injuries thankfully have been assessed as not life threatening.

Gardaí are presently appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact them at Tipperary Town Garda Station, Tel: 062-80670 or on the Garda Confidential Line, Tel: 1800 666 111.
