On March 28th 2019, we highlighted the continuous failure by Tipperary County Council and the Templemore / Thurles Municipal District Council, both officials and councillors, to fix, once and for all, the simple problem regarding pedestrian crossing lights in Cathedral Street Thurles, and the continued wasting of tax payer’s money. This problem was partially corrected today; well for another few days until another lorry comes along.
Of course, what wasn’t fixed was the very same problem existing on Parnell Street, in the town, where for some days, motor vehicles normally being controlled by a system of pedestrian traffic lights, find that they are being ignored, while customers entering and leaving the back door of Thurles Credit Union are being blinded by red, green and flashing yellow lights.
Yet another repair trip required to further waste money. And no, this isn’t a new problem, but once again, like Cathedral Street, it is a constant recurring problem, time after time, after time.
When Thurles politicians and councillors head up to Dáil Éireann shortly, visiting, we understand, the haunt of Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Mr Richard Bruton; in their effort to save Liberty Square; maybe they could make a full day of it and try to locate the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Shane Ross. Ask him when are we going to get our long awaited ‘Ring Road / Bypass’. Give him a list of the unfortunate persons who have lost their lives through traffic attempting to traverse 12th century ‘bóithre’, [Literally translated into English – “Cow Paths”. ] Shane Ross is big into saving lives, e.g. Learner drivers, Drivers with a glass of wine consumed, etc.
Councillors and Politicians intending to canvass for upcoming elections, do take note; doorstep conversations are not going to be about An Post moving offices, it will be about the missing and long awaited ‘Ring Road / Bypass’.
 Thurles Railway Station Forgotten rural Ireland remains a little more forgotten this evening, as trains servicing the south-east are cancelled.
We understand that the rail services from Dublin will travel only as far as Portlaoise, due, once again, to a recurring power failure.
We are told that a bus service will be provided to ensure rail customers reach their destination. However commuters have previously found that this alternative bus service was not sufficient to accommodate all Irish Rail passengers and commuters in the past have been forced to wait for some 40 minutes for other buses to turn up.
Somewhat irate Irish rail representatives this evening at Portlaoise Railway station, have confirmed to passengers that they cannot be sure when their service will be back to normal or if trains will be allowed to return to Dublin either tonight or indeed early tomorrow morning.
 Persons travelling in a westerly direction on Kickham Street, Thurles, both pedestrians and motorists, are warned to be aware that an ESB street light is swinging dangerously loose overhead.
The swinging lamp is positioned on the roadside opposite No.6 and No.7 Kyle Terrace.
An Garda Síochána have been notified.
Recent high winds are believed to have loosened the lamp portion of the street light from its original standard moorings.
In November of 2015 ‘Storm Barney’ took taken down electricity cables close to the same area, closing down the street to pedestrians and motorists for a short time.
A female Mute Swan slowed traffic down on Barry’s Bridge, for a short time, here in Thurles today, February 4th 2019.
We understand the unfortunate bird was blinded by the sun, as she glided southwards towards the waters of the River Suir, clipping its wings on unseen overhead Christmas illuminations.
The Mute Swan, despite being badly shaken by the ordeal, remained ‘mute’, and having once more recovered her bearings; allowed herself to be escorted back to the river by sympathetic locals. [Tipperary Co. Council could be in for yet another compensation claim, should she decide to visit her ‘Fowl Advocate’.]
But why are Christmas Lights, Reindeer, Snowmen, Santa Clauses and religious paraphernalia left, still hanging; strung across the Thurles skyline, 6 weeks after Santa Clause has come and gone, I hear you say. Especially since only half of same truly functioned during this last festive season.
I regret to communicate that this seems to be the new policy, being initiated by the Templemore / Thurles Municipal District Council, for the past two years. Indeed, last year (2018) quite a few of our aerial embellishments were not removed until March, while lights on Barry’s Bridge remained up until July, and others on Cathedral Street and on Thurles Castle; same were not removed at all.
Still, remember you can register your dissatisfaction on May 19th 2019; as Councillors now begin to come, once more, out of the woodwork, highlighting ‘dog poo’, and the funding of ‘Thurles entry roads signs’, left out-of-date for 10 years.
Councillor Michéal Lowry (Templemore / Thurles Municpal District), welcomes funding for the maintenance & improvement of regional & local roads in Co. Tipperary.
 Cllr. Michéal Lowry Cllr. Michéal Lowry has today welcomed the 2019 grant allocations from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to Tipperary Co. Council, in respect of maintenance and improvement works to be carried out on regional and local roads.
The total grant allocation in 2019 for Tipperary Co. Council is €25,766,721 million. In particular, Cllr. Lowry welcomed the funding of €75,000, which has been allocated to allow for the construction of a new raised roundabout on Abbey Road, Thurles, at the junction of the entrances to Lidl Supermarket and the Kennedy Park housing estate.
“This current grant allocation is positive news for Tipperary overall and I am delighted that a key project here in Thurles, which I had particularly requested for inclusion in the 2019 allocation, has received funding,” said Cllr. Lowry. “Following today’s funding announcement, the construction of this new raised roundabout, on the R-660 at Abbey Road, can now get under way”, Cllr. Lowry concluded.
