Tipperary Are Munster Final Hurling Champions 2015

HurlingWith 43,084 fans in attendance at Semple Stadium, Thurles, today; for Waterford it was to be their first defeat of the hurling season and for Tipperary it was to be their first Munster hurling final title win since 2012. For both teams also it was to remain a game of ‘points’ only.

Tipperary opened the scoring with a long distance point from Niall O’Meara, with his team colleague Seamus Callanan popping over a second, from a rather soft awarded free and all within the first three minutes of the game. Colin Dunford was first to open Waterford’s account with a point.

Within the first fifteen minutes, points from Tipperary’s Callanan,  Shanahan, O’Dwyer, Ronan Maher and Waterford’s Colin Dunford left the scoreboard reading Tipperary four points clear with Tipperary 0-06 to Waterford’s 0-02.

However by the twenty ninth minute Tipperary gains were to be levelled with Tipperary 0-07 Waterford 0-07, courtesy of Waterford’s Jake Dillon, a long-range point from fellow comrade Austin Gleeson, three points from Maurice Shanahan and all despite another beautiful strike from Tipperary’s Seamus Callanan,

On the thirtieth minute the scores are level again despite a rather dubious free expertly taken and driven over by Tipperary’s John O’Dwyer; followed by Waterford’s excellent long distance strike from Shane Fives. Waterford now take their only lead through their captain Kevin Moran, but Tipp full-forward Michael Breen splits the posts to tie up the game once again and with just one minute of added time in the first half, Seamus Callanan points over from a free from near the sideline.

Half-Time Score: Tipperary 0-10 Waterford 0-09.

First score of the second half came from Tipp’s Jason Forde, but received quick replies from Waterford’s Shane Fives and a Maurice Shananahan ’65, which, once again, left both teams level; Tipperary 0-11 Waterford 0-11.

By the 60th minute Tipperary’s hard work and superior physical fitness appears to make headway with points from Lar Corbett, John O’Dwyer, Niall O’Meara, and the accurate genius that is Seamus Callanan. With only one Waterford reply from Maurice Shanahan, tallies for both teams read Tipperary 0-17 Waterford 0-13.

In the sixty third minute Shanahan scores again but Waterford supporters know a goal is now a must and when Callanan’s ’65 goes between the posts hopes for a Waterford triumph begin to fade. Both team tallies read Tipperary 0-18 Waterford 0-14.

Before the full-time whistle; with two minutes of extra time added, Waterford gained two further points from substitute Patrick Curran and Austin Gleeson, but Tipperary were not wanting with answered points; added by Tipp’s John O’Dwyer, Patrick Maher and Shane Bourke.

Full Time Score: Tipperary 0-21 Waterford 0-16

A defeated Waterford must now move on and focus on an All-Ireland quarter-final against Dublin on July 26th next, while Tipperary must wait until August 16th for their All-Ireland semi-final.

Tipperary Team: D. Gleeson, C. Barrett, J. Barry, R. Maher, S. McGrath, Padraic Maher, K. Bergin, J. Woodlock, M. Breen, J. Forde, B. Maher, Patrick Maher, J. O’Dwyer, S. Callinan and N. O’Meara.

Subs: L. Corbett for M. Breen, S. Bourke  for J. Forde and C. O’Brien for S. McGrath.

“Foot Golf” Now A First For Cashel, Co. Tipperary

Foran1

Denis O’Meara, John Foran and Michael Bannon become the first three people to play ‘Foot Golf’ in Co. Tipperary’s  history.

Welcome to the new and wonderful world of “Foot Golf” here in the most scenic of areas in Co. Tipperary. Same comes courtesy of Cashel Golf Range, Ballyknock, Cashel, latter venue situated just off the R639 [Map Ref], close to Cashel town.

Yes ‘Foot Golf’ is now the latest new precision Irish outdoor pursuit to hit Co. Tipperary, blending those two most enjoyable of recreational sports, namely Football and Golf.

“What is Foot Golf ?” I hear you ask!  Well it all started back somewhere between the years 2006 – 2008, possibly beginning first in the Netherlands.  Basically is comes down to simple logic “Why play just one sport when you can play two at the same time”. Players simply take two great sports; Football and Golf, then combine both together using the existing rules attributed to the game of Golf.

Players kick a regulation No. 5 soccer ball into a specially designed 21-inch “cup” which replaces the normally expected standard golf hole. In doing so players attempt to take the least amount of kicks as is possible between each hole. The player who plays all 18 holes with the fewest kicks wins.

For most players each round will take approximately two hours to complete and soccer balls can be cheaply rented at this same Cashel venue – or you may wish to bring along your own.

The attraction of this new sport is that it can be played by anyone who is a lover of either golf or football, while involving whole families from young children to grandparents.  Same is now being recognised as the perfect outing for that close group of Friends (Ladies and Gents), that Corporate Event and of course that ever popular ‘Hen‘ or ‘Stag‘ party outing.

“What do you wear?”  Simple answer, “whatever you like”, with the exception of possibly golf shoes with spikes which, as a general rule, are not allowed for obvious reasons. Ordinary ‘Runners and ‘Football Boots‘ are acceptable and indeed recommended.

All in all this game promises to be a most inexpensive outing for families, with no expensive sports clothing or golfing equipment required. Also important is the fact that this new sport offers that important daily two hours of light exercise, recommended to maintain physical fitness and overall health and wellness.

Congratulations to ‘Cashel Golf Range’ for their initiative in introducing this most enjoyable of new sports to Co. Tipperary. Meanwhile if you fancy a game then Phone 062-62111 this weekend.
