Tipperary To Face Kilkenny In All Ireland Senior Hurling Final

Full-Time in All-Ireland SHC semi-final: Tipperary 2-19 (25pts) – (Galway 2-18 (24pts).

HurlingIn a titanic clash between Galway and Tipperary today in Dublin’s Croke Park; while in front of some 54,000 spectators, Tipperary won with a 1 point margin, to face Kilkenny once again in September’s All Ireland Hurling final.

First Half.
In the first minute Joe Canning slotted over the first point for Galway, in an over shoulder movement. Same was quickly answered by points from Tipperary’s Noel McGrath and Michael Breen and in turn answered again by Galway’s Conor Whelan.
Following a super build up from Galway;  Conor Cooney then rifled the first goal of the game into the back of the net. However two minutes later Tipp’s Seamus Callanan and Michael Breen had both replied, leaving the scoreboard, after the first 10 minutes, reading Galway 1-02 (5pts) to Tipperary’s 0-04

Points from Galway’s Cooney, Canning, Manion and Tipperary’s Callanan and Noel McGrath, saw the sides equal again by the 23rd minute with Galway 1-06 (9pts) to Tipperary 0-09.  Further points from Galway’s David Burke, Joe Cooney, and Canning together with Tipp’s Seamus Callanan see the half-time tally with Tipperary shading the score line with two points in arrears; Galway 1-10 (13pts) – to Tipperary’s 0-11.

Second Half .
Following a hamstring injury, alas ‘Tribesman’ Joe Canning was unable to take part in the second half and by the 40th minute Tipperary’s Callanan and Forde points had cancelled the Premier Counties indebtedness, with Galway 1-11 (14pts) to Tipperary’s 0-14.

Tipperary took the lead briefly following a point from a free by Callanan, however same was short lived with a goal (3 pts) courtesy of Galway’s Joseph Cooney, in the 44th minute; score Galway 2-12 (18 pts) – Tipperary 0-15.

With 23 minutes of ordinary time left to play, Tipperary now introduce John O’Dwyer from the bench, into full forward line.

Points from determined Tipperary’s Callanan, Ronan Maher, Padraic Maher and Noel McGrath and an equally determined Galway’s Conor Cooey, Harte, and Smith combine to cancel Tipperary’s efforts and by the 60th minute, Galway remain 2pts ahead; Galway 2-15 (21 pts) to Tipperary’s 0-19.

With this 2 point lead by Galway, Tipperary’s John O’Dwyer rides out all the challenges to rifle home that longed-awaited first goal for the Premier County, which arrived in the 62 minute. Galway replied with a 30 metre free to score another point, but two minutes later, in the 64th minute, yet another goal is added to Tipperary’s tally;  Tipperary 2-19 (25 pts) – Galway 2-16 (22 pts).

With Tipperary 3 points in the lead, Galway are not vanquished yet, but with 2 points from Conor Cooney and Shane Maloney and despite 2 minutes of extra time added on, Tipperary held on to their lead, to claim the day.

Tipperary Dismantle Waterford To Win 42nd Munster Title

HurlingFinal Score: Tipperary 5-20 (35 Pts) – Waterford 0-13.

Tipperary’s John McGrath and Seamus Callanan were the leading scorers, as the Premier County easily dismantled Waterford’s Déise side, in yesterday afternoon’s Munster SHC final at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.  Both men generated a collective total of 4-13 (25 pts); with McGrath chalking up 3-02 (11 pts), and Callanan 1-11 (14 pts); both combining their immense hurling talents.

Tipp will now advance to an All-Ireland Semi-Final on August 14th next, leaving a dejected Waterford to face Wexford in the quarter-finals on July 24th.

Today’s meeting of Derek McGrath’s Waterford charges against Michael Ryan’s Tipperary demolition crew, mean that the former have lost their last five Munster final appearances against the latter, since 2009 and most recently just last year.

Perhaps it was the inclement weather conditions prevailing or perhaps it was a disastrous game plan, but overall it was a poor hurling first-half.  While Waterford came out of the blocks sharply and reacted very well to Tipp’s first-half nine minute goal; 15 minutes later their game plan had collapsed, never to return.

Despite this, at half time the scoreboard showed Tipperary a mere two points clear; Tipperary 1-07 (10 pts), to Waterford’s 0-08; the points on both sides coming from Tipp’s S. Callanan, J. McGrath’s goal, and Padraic Maher, with the Déise’s contribution arriving via P. Curran, A. Glesson, P. Mahony, and J. Barron.

Just six seconds into the second half and Waterford’s Patrick Curran narrows the Tipp gap to just one point. However from that point onwards Waterford appeared to be reduced to producing a poor quality, almost schoolboy, style of hurling, which would lead to Tipperary unleashing a merciless intensity and to Waterford’s eventual annihilation.

Only 5 further points were to be added to Waterford’s tally over the next 39 minutes; coming courtesy of P. Mahony and P. Curran. Reading the game, Tipp now upped their intensity with scores arriving from S. Kennedy, S. Callinan, N. McGrath, J. McGrath, B. Maher, S. Callanan, and later Sub’s Jason Forde and Aidan McCormack.

Some 74 minutes of overall game time saw the Tipperary score at 5-20 (35 pts) to Waterford’s 0-13, with Tipperary easily taking their 42nd Munster title.

Kilkenny’s successful manager Brian Cody, as always, was lurking in the crowd today, continuing to view Tipperary form.  Based on their more recent hurling presentations, he will have learned that perhaps Kilkenny may still have preparations to make, if they are to remain All-Ireland Hurling Title holders.

Tipperary Team: D. Gleeson; C. Barrett; J Barry; M. Cahill; S. Kennedy; R. Maher; P. Maher (0-01); B. Maher; M. Breen (1-01); D. McCormack; Patrick Maher ; N. McGrath (0-01); J. McGrath (3-02); S. Callanan (1-11), and N. O’Meara.

Subs: J. Forde (0-01) for N. O’Meara; S. Curran for D. McCormack; K. Bergin for B. Maher; A. McCormack (0-01) for N. McGrath and D. Maher for R. Maher.

Referee: B. Gavin (Offaly).

Note Change To Thurles Sports Fest Programme

We understand from the Thurles Sports Fest Committee that two errors appear on the recently published programme brochure, issued publicly to homes throughout Tipperary today. One of these errors regrettably is also carried presently on their website, for which the committee humbly apologise.

Firstly the Thurles Sports Fest Committee wish to point out that the Festival will run from July 1st to July 10th 2016 and not July 1st to July 9th as published on the brochure.

Secondly, and more important, the ‘Scór Bowls for Special Needs’ event, scheduled originally for Friday July 8th 2016, will in fact open this year’s festival on Friday July 1st 2016 at 11.00am.  We wish the best of luck to all of those set to take part.

To remind you all of this upcoming event, please see pictures on video hereunder from the very first successful Bowling occurrence in 2014.

To watch in HD please click HERE.

The Thurles Sports Fest will now in fact get off to a flying start with a well attended official ‘Indoor Target Bowling’ competition, and with all competitors playing for the coveted Olden Cup, together with associated individual medals for runner’s up and winning team members.
