Tipperary Terrorise Dublin In All-Ireland SHC Qualifier

Despite the humid conditions at Semple Stadium here in Thurles, All-Ireland defending champions Tipperary took no prisoners this evening, trouncing a fragmented Dublin side in the All-Ireland SHC round 2 qualifiers, to rub shoulders with the final four.

Seamus Callanan collected a personal tally of 3-11 (20pts) as Tipperary battered Dublin by a massive 6-26 (44pts) to 1-19 (22pts), punishing their earlier reluctant, yet expectant guests, by a massive 22 points.

Tipperary were far too professional for the visiting players from ‘The Pale’, and despite the former looking defensively poor in the first half, the Premier’s S. Callanan, J. McGrath and John O’Dwyer terrorised their opponents, proving once more that future pretenders to the All Ireland throne, can expect stiff opposition in their efforts to regain the Liam MacCarthy crown.

Tipperary Team:
D. Gleeson; D Maher; T. Hamill; J. Barry; J. O’Dwyer; R. Maher; P. Maher; B. Maher; M. Breen; J Forde; P. Maher; D. McCormack; J. O’Dwyer; S. Callanan and J McGrath.

Subs:

Major Security In & Around Semple Stadium This Weekend

Semple’s Field, Thurles, Co. Tipp

Dedicated hurling fans, entering Semple Stadium during this coming weekend, will be thoroughly searched by Gardaí and security, before admission to the venue is granted.

This weekend’s increased security has been updated in light of recent terror attacks across Europe and the UK, and individuals attending are being asked to remain understanding and cooperate, in the interests of in-house security and overall public safety.

Aficionados of this weekend’s Gaelic Games line-out are being asked to arrive early and to circumvent the carrying of unnecessary large bags or rucksacks, thus avoiding delays.

Senior officers at Thurles Garda Station are requesting match ticket holders to arrive in Thurles well in advance of the Saturday evening / Sunday games, to facilitate a ‘frisk and bag search’ of those entering or found in the vicinity of the stadium grounds.

Thurles Gardaí also warn of possible traffic delays on roads leading to the popular venue.

Semple’s field Thurles Wins 2017 Pitch Award

Semple Stadium, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Semple’s field (Semple Stadium) here in Thurles, Co. Tipperary is the inaugural winner of the 2017 Pitch Award, while St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge in County Kildare have been declared as the runner-up.

Other pitches, namely O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal; Dr Hyde Park, Co. Roscommon; Páirc Uí Rinn, Co. Cork and Innovate Wexford Park, Co. Wexford were also short-listed for the award.

Judging of pitches nationwide was conducted by Mr Stuart Wilson, (Manager Croke Park Pitch and GAA National Games Development Centre), and Dr. Stephen Barker (Sports Research Institute), who both visited all the above six short-listed venues.

Their final decision involved scoring and feedback from referees, while taking into consideration a Pitch Quality Assessment; same based on performance standards, construction, management program, environmental conditions and overall usage levels.

The awards scheme is just part of a wider initiative to improve the standard of playing surfaces around Ireland, while sharing the expertise and experience used at Croke Park and conveyed by the GAA’s National Pitch Committee.

GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail commenting stated that he wished to congratulate the grounds team at Semple Stadium on winning this award, and salute the work undertaken by all involved.

The grounds crew at Semple Stadium together with the runner up, will receive their award at an All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final next August, while also receiving pitch supplies courtesy of Irish Turfcare, ICL and Campey Turfcare Systems.

Meanwhile All-Ireland champions Tipperary will face Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final in Round Two of the hurling qualifiers, this Saturday in Semple Stadium beginning at 5.00pm, followed by Kilkenny v Waterford, with a throw-in time scheduled for 7.00pm.

Dublin were most efficient in seeing-off Laois on Saturday last, while Tipperary were far from ‘at their best’ against Westmeath. Next Saturday should demonstrate if Tipperary were just experiencing that ‘off-day’.

Show Jumper Greg Broderick Acquires Fortwilliam, Borrisoleigh

Thurles, Co. Tipperary native and Irish Olympic show jumper Mr Greg Broderick is the new owner of Fortwilliam House, Borrisoleigh, Co Tipperary, together with the attached 217 acre estate.

Mr Broderick is understood to have paid €2.2m for the house, together with a number of dated stone farm buildings and the 217 acres of prime Tipperary land.

Mr Broderick came to International prominence on his mount ‘MHS Going Global’, having previously competed on the National and International show jumping scene, and being crowned ‘Showjumping Ireland National Champion’ in 2014. He was also instrumental in Ireland capturing the coveted Aga Khan Trophy at the Dublin Horse Show in 2015, due to his clear round as then part of the Irish Aga Khan team, while last year chosen to represent Ireland in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

His gelding mount ‘MHS Going Global’ of which Mr Broderick owned a small share, was recently purchased by Greek heiress Athina Onassis Roussel, latter the granddaughter of Greek-Argentine shipping magnate, Aristotle (Ari) Onassis, who amassed the world’s largest privately owned shipping fleet and was one of the world’s richest and most famous men.

The Cooke property at Borrisoleigh, which was sold by local auctioneer Mr Vincent Ryan, is now expected to form part of a future major expansion plan by Mr Broderick, including the erection of a new stable block, gallops, paddocks, offices and a viewing area.

The newly purchased classic Georgian property, on the banks of the Cremogue River and boasting 800m of road frontage, is located within 1km of Borrisoleigh village and is centred around a substantial dwelling in need of refurbishment. Same property was the ancestral home of the Cooke family, of which the last surviving member passed away on November 12th 2016 last, thus making the holding the subject of an Executor Sale.

Cork Take Four Point Win Over Tipperary

The reigning Provincial and All-Ireland Hurling Champions Tipperary were dethroned by Cork this afternoon, with the latter gaining their first championship win in Thurles since 2006.

Cork began well, taking 3 points in the first 4 minutes, courtesy of Conor Lehane, Luke Meade and Seamus Harnedy, but Tipperary by the 7th minute were even, with points from Noel McGrath, Brendan Maher and and Sean Curran.

A point by Cork’s Alan Cadogan is answered by Tipperary’s Michael Breen and so for the first 35 minutes spectators witnessed a superb exhibition of point-taking, with both teams levelling the match for an incredible 12 times. Half-time score Tipperary 0-15pts –  Cork 0-15pts.

At the beginning of the second-half Conor Lehane put Cork back in front with his fifth point of the match, quickly answered by Tipperary’s Dan McCormack. Cork’s Pat Horgan gets a point, followed in the 43 minute by the first goal of the game from Cork’s Shane Kingston. Tipperary’s John O’Dwyer (Bubbles) grabed a point back following a foul. Score now stands Tipperary 0-17pts – Cork 1-17 (20pts)

Points continue to be traded, coming from Cork’s Mark Ellis, Conor Lehane, Pat Horgan and Shane Kingston; all being answered by Tipperary’s Noel McGrath, Michael Breen and Seamus Callanan.

Then in the 56 minute Tipperary take the lead, as Callanan switches play to target John McGrath, positioned on the edge of the square. The Loughmore / Casteliney man did not fail; rifling the sliotar into the top corner of Cork’s net. Score going into the 57th minute Tipperary 1-22 (25pts)Cork 1-21 (24pts).

Cork’s Conor Lehane now equalises and with just over 10 minutes to go fellow team mate Shane Kingston puts the Rebels once more in the lead.

Points follow from Tipperary’s Niall O’Meara and Brendan Maher, answered by Cork’s Conor Lehane leaving the score at the 67th minute, Tipperary 1-24 (27pts)Cork 1-24 (27pts).

A further point from Cork and then disaster; the sliotar bounces to a waiting Cork substitute, Michael Cahalane, and he buries it easily past the Tipperary goal keeper Darren Gleeson. Despite four minutes of additional playing time and an intrepid and audacious Tipperary team, the full-time final scoreboard read Tipperary 1-26 (29pts) –  Cork 2-27 (33pts).

Despite Corks 4 point win; surely today’s game must go down on record as one of the closest Munster championship ever contested in recent memory.
