Dawn Fresh Foods Ltd, with an address at Killenaule Road, Fethard, County Tipperary have officially announced that its production facility is to close, starting with immediate effect on a phased basis.
The decision will effect an estimated 104 of the companies permanent workforce, latter who will be made redundant as a direct result of the closure. Employees were informed at a meeting on Friday last and the closure is expected to be completed by December of this current year.
The decision follows five years of tough trading conditions for the company, beginning in September 2008 when 32 workers being laid off.
The company, which manufactures Ready-Made Meals and which exports 80% of all output from their Fethard plant, has experienced a severe reduction in sales, especially since the horse meat controversy, while the weakness of sterling has also had an effect.
The company will now enter a thirty day consultation period with staff, in the hope that some viable, workable rescue plan can be constructed.
Nationally 13.5% of the Irish workforce were formally out of work in July of this year. In June 2013 the rate was 13.6%, with new jobs only being announced for the larger cities, while rural areas continue to be totally neglected.
Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive into Co Tipperary, ending up in the luxurious Dundrum House Hotel, Dundrum, over next weekend, for the annual International Miss Macra Festival, beginning Friday 2nd of August to Monday 5th of August 2013.
This prominent festival which has been running consecutively for the past 42 years, will see girls travelling from all over Ireland and beyond to Co Tipperary to compete for the honour of being crowned International Miss Macra 2013.
So what are this year’s three Judges, (Joan Pollard Carew, Deirdre Crowe and Declan Ryan,) looking for in this year’s competition, for the right to hold the title International Miss Macra 2013? All three judges confirm that this competition is about more than just beauty alone.
Yes appearance, fashion and each girls overall demeanour is very important, but they will be digging just a little deeper below the skin’s surface as it were, to find out contestants achievement, their overall personalities, their passions, intelligence, business acumen and very importantly their ability to communicate, and all carried out in the very relaxed atmosphere of this three day inclusive festival event. As Joan Pollard Carew pointed out to me last year, while the initial interview may go well for some competitors, this rarely decides the overall winner of the competition, since all girls competing, are evaluated over a full three day period.
Some twenty two girls are competing for this year’s title.

European Union negotiators agreed today to dismantle the bloc’s system of sugar production quotas, same to come into effect from October 2017.
This deal to end sugar quotas from 2017 will be subject first to final approval from EU governments and the European Parliament and is seen as part of wider reforms within the EU’s common agricultural policy.
This 45 year old system of national production quotas and minimum sugar beet prices has been blamed for creating artificial shortages of the sweetener in Europe and also for limiting EU exports, because of world trade rules on unfair subsidies.
The return of the sugar industry to Ireland if successful would be immediately identified as a real coup by farmers operating in the Tipperary agricultural sector. With a return of the Sugar industry allowed, hundreds of direct jobs could be created via three industries, sugar production and processing, feed production and possibly ethanol production.
While 2017 remains several years down the line, this is just the kind of additional kick-start that the Tipperary economy now needs, but I ask do we have the necessary political clout to deliver any future such project to our county?
