Tipperary Winners In 67th Texaco Children’s Art Competition

Paying tribute to the winners, not least those in younger age groups and special needs categories, Mr James Twohig, (Director of Ireland Operations for Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited), congratulated all the young
artists who, he said, “continue to demonstrate their skills and ability in the incredible prize-winning entries we see this and every year.”

Celebrating an unbroken 67 year history, the Texaco Children’s Art Competition was conducted, this year, in the face of school Covid-19 closures and other limitations applying over the past 12 months, which required amendments to the announcement of winners; the presentation of prizes; and other activities which are traditionally held in April and May each year.

Not surprisingly therefore, Mr. Twohig should praise not just the
artists, but also their parents and teachers for what he calls “their enthusiasm and continued interest in the Competition, as a platform on which they can showcase their imagination, exercise their creativity and display their very exceptional talents.”

Past winners whose early interest in art and the arts may well have been encouraged by their participation in the Texaco Children’s Art Competition include artists Graham Knuttel, Robert Ballagh, Bernadette Madden, Dorothy Cross, fashion designer Paul Costelloe, and artist and former broadcaster Thelma Mansfield.

This year’s Co. Tipperary winning entries, whose work can be viewed HERE are named as follows:-

Frankie Burke, aged 8, representing Killurney National School, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, with artwork entitled “Butterfly Fish”.
Ailbhe Treacy, aged 12, representing Lissenhall National School, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, with artwork entitled “Life Going On”.

LIT Student Is People’s Choice At Smedia Awards 2021.

President of LIT Professor Vincent Cunnane has congratulated third year LIT Creative Broadcast and Film Production student Ms Alyssa Fleming who won the People’s Choice Award at the Smedia Awards 2021, with her film “The Daily Grind“.

“Winning a National Student Media Award – or Smedia – in any year is a great achievement, but to create an award-winning film during a time when our movements were limited due to a global pandemic is particularly significant. Alyssa and her fellow students have shown great determination, creativity and resolve to create such excellent work despite the Covid-19 restrictions,” said Professor Cunnane.

“I would like to congratulate Alyssa on her success and acknowledge the work of her fellow creative broadcast student Matt Murphy, who expertly edited the winning film The Daily Grind. Credit must also go to the LIT teaching staff, who continue to teach, encourage and inspire the next generation of broadcasters and film makers.”

Ms Nora Ní Fhlathárta, Programme Leader, Creative Broadcast & Film Production congratulated the Smedia People Choice Award winner, while also paying tribute to LIT’s Laura Mannix, the first-year student of Creative Broadcast, who was nominated for the Short Animation of the Year award

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic many students had to restructure their original film plans so as to adhere to Government health guidelines. However, all was not lost as sometimes, having to restructure allowed students to embrace formats they might never have considered. Troubleshooting is part and parcel of film making and we are so proud of all our film students who have created a diverse and unique range of film and audio projects this year,” she said.

Alyssa Fleming’s award-winning film tells the story of a stressed coffee shop owner who pushes her eccentric staff for ideas to save the business during lockdown.

Speaking following receiving her Smedia award, Alyssa said, “I’m very grateful to everyone who voted for The Daily Grind and I am also very grateful to my actors and Matt Murphy for editing the piece. Making a film during lockdown was tough, but the final product is something that I am very proud of.”

Holycross Bi-Weekly Market Huge Success On Saturday Last.

A multitude of consumers turned out to support the first local Village Market held in Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary on Saturday last.

“From a needle to an anchor” can be found at Holycross Market.

This first Bi-Weekly Market was officially blessed by Rev. Fr. Celsus Tierney (Parish Priest Holycross) and officially opened by Mr Paddy Hayes (Holycross Tidy Village Association) and Mrs Ann Lanigan (Village Committee Member).

It was truly great to witness the many visitors in attendance and the skilled locals, of all ages, trading on the day.  Despite unsettled weather, most of those selling fresh produce were sold out within the first hour of trading.

A huge ‘Thank You’ must go to Fr. Tierney, Holycross parish, Holycross committee, local Tidy Village Association members, the stewards, vendors, musicians, Cormackstown Heritage Centre, Mairead Ryan and most of all to the members of public who came in search of fresh local produce and the many other attractive hand made goods.

The Village Market look forward to welcoming everyone on Saturday next May 29th; (1:00pm to 3:00pm) and every second week thereafter.

Death Of Tom Hickey, Star Of ‘The Riordans’.

Sadly, today May 2nd 2021, the death has been announced of Actor Mr Tom (Thomas) Hickey, South Circular Road, Dublin and late of Co. Kildare.

Mr Hickey appeared on stage and screen in a career that began in the early 1960s. Alas, in more recent years he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Hickey was one of the founding members of Dublin’s Focus Theatre and went on to work with many of Ireland’s leading playwrights and directors. However, he will possibly be best remembered for his television role as ‘Benjy Riordan’ in the rural Ireland Telefís Éireann series, ‘The Riordans’.

In the early to mid 1970s, I had the great honour of working with Mr Hickey on several occasions, as a member of Irish Actors Equity, and while working as a ‘film extra’ during the making of several outside broadcast episodes of the same Irish television drama, while on location in Dunboyne, Co. Meath.

Mr Hickey, passed away peacefully while in the care of staff at Orwell Private Nursing Home, Rathgar, Co. Dublin, surrounded by his loving family.

His passing is most deeply regretted by his son Lee, brothers Kieran, Tim and John B, sisters Philomena and Annemarie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, former colleagues in the theatre community and a wide circle of friends.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
