Fire At Thurles Bus Depot - Photo: Brian Corbett
A large bus was seemingly set ablaze at the Thurles Bus Depot today at approximately mid-day, Saturday 9th June 2012. Thick black smoke could be seen from a long distance away as the the bus was consumed by fire. Three Fire Brigades and one tanker were called to the scene to contain the fire and the North Tipperary Fire & Rescue Service quickly brought the blaze and smoke under control. Gardaí were also quickly on the scene to handle traffic on the road outside of the depot and any investigation that may be required. A small crowd had gathered outside the gates of the Bus Depot but quickly dispersed as the fire was brought under control.
The cause of the fire is as yet unknown at the moment but local people have told me that they had long complained about individuals using the buses for drinking purposes. It is unclear as to whether the bus fire was deliberate or accidental at the moment, but CCTV footage should be available to the Gardaí to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
Anyone with information can contact gardaí in Thurles at Tel: 0504 25100.
UPDATE: The following picture shows the aftermath of the bus fire earlier today. This picture was taken later this evening and shows five vehicles damaged in the blaze.

Thurles is to become the host for the International Hurling Festival 2012 which will take place on Friday 13th July and Saturday 14th July 2012. The festival will coincide with the Munster Hurling Final weekend with the Munster Final being held on the Sunday 15th July. Players and fans from Ireland and all over the world will descend on Thurles for this weekend Festival.
The GAA, Thurles Sarsfields GAA Club, Shannon Development and other regional partnerships and bodies have organised the two day event to serve up a feast of hurling activity with clubs and teams competing for a range of cups and silverware culminating in the Munster GAA Senior Hurling Final on 15th July (venue TBC).
Speaking at the official launch of the event Liam Ó Néill of Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, said, “The International Hurling Festival of events scheduled will really add to what is always an exciting weekend for hurling enthusiasts, the occasion of the Munster Senior Hurling Final.” Liam went on to say, “It is hugely encouraging to see the number of clubs from our overseas network involved in the hurling festivities and I have no doubt that the organising committee, host club, Thurles Sarsfields and all the players and officials involved will derive massive satisfaction from an initiative which has the potential to occupy a place in our calendar on an annual basis. ”
John Enright, chairman of the organising committee said, “The festival is an effort by the Thurles Sarsfield club to aid the development of hurling as an international game while at the same time stimulating the local economy by attracting teams and visitors to the area. Hurling is unique to Ireland and has a huge largely un-tapped potential to boost tourism to our country in these difficult financial times.”
The European Hurling and Camogie Championships Finals will take place on Saturday 14th July. Teams from Switzerland, Sweden, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Belgium and Spain amongst others will compete over the course of the day to become the 2012 European Champions. The festival will also showcase the International Camán Abú Tournament for Social And Recreational Hurling which just shows how hurling is diversifying and is encouraging more people to play it.
This festival should be a great success and a welcome boost to the Thurles economy. It is especially appropriate given that Thurles is the European Town of Sport 2012.

It was a great night at the Source Arts Center on Friday 11th May where Autonomous i lauched their debut album ‘Attack The Mattress‘. The venue was packed with fans when Autonomous i took to the stage at 9.30PM. The band blazed through a number of songs from the new album. Among the songs performed were ‘Minus One’, ‘Aoife Says’, ‘Stand Up And Take It’, ‘Start Again’ and lots more. The band put on a great show with smoke, nice lighting effects and the sound was terrific. Great stuff guys and best of luck with the album.

Supporting acts on the night were Adela and the Meanits who wooed the crowd with her own brand of quirky, up-beat music that went down very well with the crowd. Local band Seskin Lane kicked off the night with their own laid-back rock songs and ballads.

Overall, the night was very enjoyable and it’s worth remembering that all the songs that night were original songs by original artists which is really great to see. There’s plenty of original music talent out there, it’s well worth checking any of these bands out the next time they have a gig on. Recommended.
Attack The Mattress is available for download now on iTunes, Amazon and on other online music stores. The CD is also available in Tower Records, Dublin and Heartbeat City in Thurles.
You can find upcoming gigs, booking details, latest news and videos about Autonomous i on their Facebook page or MySpace page.
