A search by South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association, Search and Rescue Dog Association (Ireland), Rescue 117 and An Garda Síochána, aimed at locating a missing female runner, have sadly discovered a body in the Comeragh Mountains in Co Waterford.
The missing female, aged 37, who had been running alone; had been due to return from her run in the mountains at around 2:00pm on Sunday afternoon last. However, emergency services were alerted at 3:00pm, when her husband, despite numerous efforts, failed to make contact.
The woman, understood to be an experienced runner from the south Thurles area, had been running on a 6.9 kilometer loop trail around Coumshingaun lough; latter a popular venue for those involved in mountain running and hill walking.
In a statement this evening, a Garda spokesman has confirmed that a scene was being preserved following the discovery of a body, in the Commeragh Mountains area of Co. Waterford.
Those involved in the search had previously requested that those out walking in the Nire Valley, Rathgormack or Mahon Falls areas, should watch out for anything unusual and to immediately contact the Gardaí or S.E.M.R.A.
No further information is available at this time as investigations are continuing.
