Advice from the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan, “Every individual in Ireland should consider themselves potentially infectious. Our health system will not continue to cope with this level of impact.”
The Department of Health have confirmed this evening that there have sadly been 7 further deaths caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; leaving the overall death toll, here in the Republic of Ireland, remaining at 2,259.
There are 4,962 new additional virus cases reported today, leaving the current total number of confirmed cases, since conception in the Irish Republic, at 101,887.
Of today’s cases; 350 are in Cork, 1,260 in Dublin, 652 in Limerick, 321 in Louth, 238 in Meath and 2,141 spread across all remaining counties.
In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has reported 1,662 cases in the past 24 hours, with sadly a further 6 deaths.
Once again, one of the lowest 14-day incidence rates, per 100,000 of population nationally, is in Co. Tipperary (250.7), and Wicklow (195.2), however in Co. Tipperary, these too are rising steadily, with 130 cases confirmed in the 24 hours prior to midnight on January 2nd; leading to some 400 new cases having been confirmed here in Co. Tipperary over the past 14 days.
An Tánaiste Mr Leo Varadkar has said the situation regarding Covid-19 is alarming and further restriction levels cannot be ruled out. Same situation is confirmed by The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation who state that hospitals are under extreme pressure and any progress made on keeping case numbers down seems to have been completely undone.
There are now 685 patients with Covid-19 in hospital in the Republic, with 62 patients in intensive care units.
Total global cases up to 5.30pm this evening, now stand at well over 84.7 million, with global deaths at almost 1.84 million.
