It was with sadness that we learned of the death, on Sunday 9th August 2020, of Canon Philip FitzGerald, Diocese of Leeds and formerly of Forgestown, Horse and Jockey, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
Canon FitzGerald was predeceased by his parents Jimmy and Nell, brother Dick and nephews James FitzGerald and Sean Carey.

Funeral Arrangements.
The earthly remains of Canon FitzGerald will be received into St. Joseph’s Church, Martin Street, Brighouse, West Yorkshire, England, at 7:00pm on Tuesday, 25th August 2020.
His reception into the church building will be followed by Mass, celebrated by Fr. Michael Hall.
Requiem Mass for Canon FitzGerald will be celebrated by Right Reverend Marcus Nigel Stock, MA, STL. Bishop of Leeds, on Wednesday, 26th August 2020, at 11:00am, followed by interment later in Brighouse Cemetery.
A Memorial Mass for Canon FitzGerald will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Church, Moycarkey, Thurles, on Sunday afternoon, August 30th, at 2:00pm.

Father Phil,
My wife and I are members of St. Joesph’s Parish in Brighouse. We knew Father Phil from the time that he arrived as a curate with Father Mulverhill PP to the time of his retirement as Parish Priest. Throughout that time Father Phil proved to be a very dedicated priest; as a curate he encouraged the formation of family discussion groups which provided an opportunity under his guidance to examine the role of the Church in the modern world. My wife knew him as a frequent visitor to the Catholic Children’s home just within the parish boundaries. Later he wanted as a chaplain to the local secondary school, as well as the spiritual leader to the parish primary school.
We do have strong connections to Munster and we would chat to him about local news and happenings. In his sermons his background in rural Ireland was often referred to, and he obviously drew inspiration from his family and friends.
A lovely man who will be missed, but remembered by the parishioners of St. Joseph’s. We realise that we were very fortunate to have Father Phil as our priest for so many years.
