Gardaí have confirmed this afternoon that, sadly, two men have died, while diving in a quarry in Portroe, north Co. Tipperary.
The men are believed to have been diving, when they got into trouble at approximately 1.30pm this evening.
The bodies of both men have now been removed to Limerick University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is expected to take place.
The slate quarry in Portroe has been recently operating as a Dive Centre and had just reopened yesterday Sat. July 4th. for the first time, since closing because of the Covid 19 pandemic. The area is described as “one of the best inland dive locations in Ireland, always divable regardless of weather conditions”.
Gardaí are understood to be treating the tragedy as an unfortunate accident.
