Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault which has left a young man fighting for his life in hospital.
The attack occurred outside of ‘The Monks’ public house on Mitchell Street, Thurles, Co Tipperary, between 1.00am and 2.00am this morning.
The 22-years old victim, who is understood to have received severe facial injuries in this assault was transferred to South Tipperary General Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Mitchell Street, familiarly known locally as the Quarry and the scene of this incident was totally sealed off by gardaí until midday and the scene preserved for technical examination. A special garda team has been set up to investigate the incident.
Local police have appealed for witnesses to come forward to gardaí at Thurles, as they believe there were a number of people in this area at the time who could assist them with their investigations.
Local residents held a public meetings in early August of this year regarding what they described as an upsurge of anti social behaviour in this area over the past number of months. As an indication of the seriousness of the situation on Mitchel Street the residents association invited a representative from the Gardaí to this public meeting and had received assurances that garda patrols would be increased.
This is the third serious assault in this normally quiet area over the past number of months.
