Special Detective Unit detain two men in connection with explosives investigation
Following the search of a house in Cahir, South Tipperary; two men, aged 50 and 33, have been detained and are being questioned in Cahir Garda station, regarding Garda investigations into explosives and firearms offences.
It is further reported that a gun, explosives (two grenades) and ammunition were seized by Gardaí during the search.
The search was carried out by the Special Detective Unit, assisted by the Emergency Response Unit together with Gardaí from the Irish South Eastern Region.
The arrests are understood to be aimed at combating the support of organised crime rather than terrorism, through the importation of explosives, firearms and ammunition.
Both men are being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and can be held in custody for up to 72 hours.
