A Tipperary Garda, convicted of assaulting two women during a night out in Co. Tipperary, has been given a six-month suspended jail sentence. The assaults occurred following a row over payment for a lift home.
Mr Brian Hanrahan, aged 34 years, who was based in Newcastle West, Co Limerick and who is a native of Killenaule, Co Tipperary, with an addresses at Ballintotty, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, was convicted earlier this year of the double offence of assault, causing harm to the two women, named as Ms Emer Kelly and Ms Aisling King.
Mr Hanrahan had denied the charges, which involved punching and kicking one of the woman; while striking the other.
Mr Hanrahan first came to news prominence in 2015 when he suffered spinal injuries and a bullet wound to the leg, following a shooting incident while on holiday in New Orlean in the US state of Louisiana. He had been hospitalised in the United States, before undergoing emergency surgery; on completion of which he was allowed to return home and back to work.
Following a sentencing hearing today, Judge Elizabeth MacGrath stated that the assault on one of the women, Ms Emer Kelly, should be viewed as a serious assault, while the other woman who was assaulted, Ms Aisling King, had been acting as a good Samaritan, in trying to help her friend.
Judge MacGrath imposed a six-month prison sentence, which she suspended for two years, in relevance to the assault on Ms Kelly, and a three-month sentence, suspended for one year, in relevance to the assault on Ms King. Sentencing had been adjourned last February, to allow for the preparation of probation and psychological reports on Mr Hanrahan.
