South Korean national Mr Ban Ki-moon is to be awarded the Tipperary International Peace Prize by the Tipperary Peace Convention for his role in tackling climate change, global conflicts and natural disasters, it was announced today.
Chosen from an original short list of seven which included Irish homeless charities and campaigners such as Fr Peter McVerry, Sr Stanislaus Kennedy and Capuchin Brother Kevin Crowley; the prize will now be presented to Mr Ban Ki-moon at a ceremony in Tipperary town later this year.
Mr Ban Ki-moon stated he was honoured to be named the latest recipient of the Tipperary Peace Award; “I see this award, above all, as a tribute to the brave and dedicated women and men of the United Nations working every day to advance peace, development and human rights around the globe and I am deeply honoured by this recognition from the Tipperary Peace Convention,” he stated.
Previous recipients of the Tipperary International Peace Award have included Bob Geldof, former US President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, late US Senator Edward Kennedy and his sister former Ambassador to Ireland Jean Kennedy-Smith, Dr Sima Samar, Benazir Bhutto, Dr Richard Haass, wounded Pakistani school girl and Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, former President Mary McAleese and her husband Senator Martin McAleese.
The Tipperary International Peace Prize, now in its 27th year, recognises the contribution of individuals and organisations that promote peaceful cooperation.
