A man, aged in his early 70’s, has died after he was struck by a car here in north Co Tipperary.
The incident happened at Lahinch on the Borrisokane to Portumna (N65) road at around 9.30 am this morning. The man is understood to have been propelling a bicycle some 3km outside Portumna, when he was struck by a car driven by a 51 year old female.
The driver of the car was uninjured in the collision, however the cyclist sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. His body has since been removed to University Hospital Limerick, where a post mortem will be carried out later today.
The road was closed pending a forensic collision examination and diversions were put in place.
Gardaí in Borrisokane are appealing for witnesses to contact them on Tel: 067-27101, or on the Garda Confidential Line Tel: 1800-666-111 or indeed any Garda station.
This death today is the second such incident on Tipperary roads this week, with a motorcyclist in his 70’s also killed, following a collision with a car close to Templemore; mid-morning on Wednesday last. This now brings to 17 the number of people killed on roads in Tipperary this year.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has stated it is greatly concerned about the high level of road fatalities nationally, this year. The RSA also confirm that 189 people have died on Irish roads so far this year, 18 of which were killed in County Tipperary alone.
In 2013, 190 people were killed in road accidents, latter the highest number killed when figures are compared with the previous seven years.
