It is with great personal sadness I report the death yesterday (May 28th 2014) of friend Mr John Hourihan, No 1 Matthew Avenue, Thurles, Co Tipperary and formally native of Kealkil, Bantry, Co Cork.
Mr Hourihan, one of the most knowledgeable and authoritative of local historians on matters pertaining to the Irish Civil War period, passed away peaceably at his home.
Mr John Hourahan is pictured here during happier times last year, while visiting the grave of Denis ‘Sonny’ O’Neill in Tyone Cemetery, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, (Latter named as responsible for the assassination of General Michael Collins on August 22nd, 1922, during the course of a fifteen to twenty minute gun battle at Béal na mBláth (English Translation: Mouth of the Flowers) in Co.Cork).
Mr Hourihan will be deeply regretted by his loving wife Mary, daughters Geraldine and Mary, sons William, Peter and Michael, sister Sheila, grandchildren Aislinn, Deirdre, Shane, David, Mary, Síona, Rory, Clare and Rhona, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law Eddie and Kevin, nieces, nephews, neighbours, relatives and many friends.
Mr Hourihan’s body will repose at Ardeen Funeral Home on Saturday, May 31st, from 4.00pm to 7.00pm; arriving at the Cathedral of The Assumption, Cathedral Street, Thurles, on Sunday June 1st, at 9.45am for Requiem Mass later at 12.00 noon.
Burial will take place afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Moyne Road, Thurles.
