A Lough Derg lifeboat crew have rescued a male kayaker from the River Nenagh here in Tipperary.
Members of the emergency services including the Gardaí and a local fire crew working from the bank of the river had tried unsuccessfully to recover the man, who was believed to be in a semi-conscious condition.
The RNLI lifeboat crew from Lough Derg were instructed to launch and attempt a rescue. Responding, the lifeboat and crew were forced to navigate the difficult waters of the Nenagh river which was strewn with heavy debris following recent bad weather in the area.
The kayaker was observed by the inshore lifeboat just past Annabeg Bridge and was pulled from the swollen river by two of the inboard three RNLI volunteer crew.
The casualty was immediately brought back to the lifeboat station at Dromineer; with the lifeboat crew administeringd first aid en route before being met by a waiting ambulance and the Coast Guard helicopter from Shannon on their arrival. A waiting paramedic gave the casualty first aid and a decision was taken to transfer the rescued man by waiting helicopter to hospital for further treatment.
The Nenagh River (Irish: An Ghaothach) rises in the Silvermine Mountains in County Tipperary, flowing east of Nenagh and into Lough Derg, just north of Dromineer village.
