Plans to build a new Garda centre for the training of officers involved in firearms and advanced driving, have now been abandoned as part of our recession spending cuts.
The 220-acre site at Clonmore, latter situated close to Templemore, Thurles, Co.Tipperary, which was ear marked for use as a firearms and as a tactical training facility was purchased, three years ago, for €5.5 million and plans to begin development have now been put on hold.
An underground firing range in Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin, has also been closed because of safety concerns. This means that gardaí who want to learn to fire weapons or take part in refresher training, are now depending on the goodwill of the Defence Forces.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said that the Garda force currently have no dedicated centre in which to train members in the use of firearms or to train specialist units like the Emergency Response Unit in tactical manoeuvres, to deal with serious armed incidents.
Delegates at the closing session of the GRA’s annual conference in Killarney, Co Kerry, were told that the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, will be completely closed for two years because of the Government’s decision not to recruit any trainee Gardai until the State’s financial position further improves.
Approximately 19 Gardaí have been recently transferred from the the Garda College in Templemore and up to 50 other Gardaí are expected to be deployed to other Garda stations in the coming weeks.

Hi, Nicole you need a foreign language to join the Gardai.
You can use EITHER English OR Irish as your base language but you must have a second language i.e French German etc…
Hi can you get into the guards with Irish and English as your languages.
I am given to understand that a third language is required, but this has yet to be confirmed to me.
When you are training to be a garda do you stay in the garda college at night and when you are sent out to a station in phase 2 does it be near home.
can u please tell me do u need a full driving licence to join the guards or do u need a licence at all?
Hi Claudia,
This question could be best answered by http://www.publicjobs.ie/publicjobs/en/star/goToJobDetails.do?id=76
Hi. Thanks for that. I have just read over the requirements and I find it kinda hard to understand but bascially I’m on a provisional licience so that means that I dont meet the requirements? Thanks for your help in the matter.
Hi Claudia,
Give Thurles Police station a buzz. Personnel on duty I am sure would be willing and able possibly to advise you, since they have ‘been there and done that’.
Thanks for the advice I will get on to them.
Hi There,
In phase two when you are sent to a garda station is there set garda stations or is it different stations all the time.
Hi,
I was wondering do you really need a third language to join the guards as I only have English and Irish and if I don’t have a third language does this mean there is no other way of getting in.
Hi Sandra,
Contact Thurles Garda Station Tel 0504-21500. The personnel on the desk there are very approachable and helpful and can assist you best with this enquiry.
