Included in our picture are Vintage Club members & Thurles Meals On Wheels volunteers & organisers Michael Kennedy, Bob Maher, Sadie Hayden, Billy Gleeson, Pat Buckley, Michael Fahey, David Campbell, Mary Doyle, Liam Morris, Kathleen Bourke, Marie O’Dwyer, Pat Russell, Rosie O’Neill, Ann Sheehan, Finola Ryan & Maureen Broderick.

Mealsonwheels

As many of our readers are aware ‘Meals on Wheels,’ are an organisation that deliver cooked food to individuals at home on certain days & therefore require volunteers to have an adequate knowledge of basic cooking in order to prepare meals by a set time each day.

Note: Volunteer drivers are regularly needed, by this worthy charity organisation, for just one hour per week to keep this centre running smoothly, so if you are available to help out, please contact Social Services at Tel: 0504-22169. The centre also provides a ‘Small Charge Laundry Service,’ every week except in the month of August.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels originated in Great Britain during the Blitz beginning in 1940, when many people had lost their homes and therefore the ability to cook their own food.  The concept of delivering hot meals evolved into today’s modern programme that deliver mostly to the housebound elderly and infirm, either for free or with a small donation. Many early services operating during the Second World War, used old prams to transport the meals, using straw bales, and even old felt hats, to keep the meals warm while in transit.

Well done to the Horse & Jockey Vintage Club members and on behalf of Thurles Meals On Wheels; ‘Thank You.’
