One of gaming tycoon Richard Quirke’s Companies was among the top payers in the latest Revenue tax defaulters list, published under Section 1086 of the Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997.
Mr Richard Quirke a joint director, together with his wife Anne, of the Dublin Pool and Juke Box Co, had failed to disclose €803,485.70 in an under-declaration of Value Added Tax (VAT). (Tax was €513,088.80 – Interest €136,470.26 – Penalties €153,926.64 = €803,485.70.)
Mr Quirke was behind the arcade ‘Dr Quirkey’s Good Time Emporium,’ on O’Connell Street, which was a major backer of plans to build a Super-Casino and Horse Racing Track at Two-Mile -Borris, Thurles and a new proposed Shopping Centre Complex also in Thurles, Co Tipperary, both of which failed in their respective planning applications.
Meanwhile Revenue state that in the three months to March its inspectors made settlements worth €20.72 million with some 126 tax defaulters, six of which exceeded €500,000.
Revenue also state that of the 126 cases it settled, seven of those investigated related to ongoing investigations into offshore funds totalling more than € €3.07 million.
Settlements are only published when the extensive voluntary disclosure options are not availed of and the default is as a result of careless or deliberate behaviour.
