More than 60 Gardaí from the South Eastern Region, including officers from the Regional Support Unit, Detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Customs were all involved in a raid on 10 homes, early this morning
Seven men have now been arrested in this series of raids which involve a criminal gang suspected of being behind over 70 serious crimes committed in this State, over the past year.
Ten homes across counties Laois and Carlow were searched and it is believed one gun, complete with a silencer and telescopic device were seized, together with a small number of cannabis plants.
Dozens of break-ins and hold-ups have taken place across counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford over the past 12 months. Crimes include ATM robberies, the theft of cars, plant & machinery, burglaries and criminal damage.
Two of the men arrested are aged in their teens, four are possibly in their 20s and one is believed to be in his mid 30s.
All are being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007, at Carlow, Kilkenny, Thomastown, New Ross and Thurles Garda stations all can be legally detained for up to seven days.
The gang are understood to be members of the infamous “Hole-in-the-wall gang” who in the past have used heavy machinery to break through walls to steal cash dispensers & safes and who have been under surveillance & investigation by Gardaí, over a considerable period of time.
