The popular busy, late opening Ely’s Centra Supermarket at Slievenamon Road, Thurles, was forced to close this evening following a small fire, which overwhelmed the premises in dense smoke.
Thankfully no customers or staff were injured as a result of the blaze, which appears to have broken out in a storage room, attached to the main building. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
Smoke however entered the main building, causing severe soot damage.
The fire at the shop, which is next door to a petrol station, was quickly brought under control by Thurles Fire Brigade.
Both the shop and the Texaco petrol station attached, are both expected to reopen tomorrow or in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the supermarket’s regular customers are invited to shop at their Kickham Street, Thurles, branch, until the premises reopens again for business.
