Covid-19 Updates: Fri. 21st May 2021 – 524 New Virus Cases.

The Department of Health this evening has confirmed there have been 524 new additional virus cases reported here within the Irish Republic; with same case numbers subject to future data validation.

There are 107 people with Covid-19 remaining in hospital today in the Republic of Ireland, and of that number 38 are in ICU.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan has stated that the National Public Health Emergency Team is very concerned about the number of cases of the variant of Covid-19, first identified in India, that has now been detected in Ireland.

Dr. Holohan said that data from Public Health England, same due to be published this evening, is likely to show a decrease in effectiveness of the current vaccine in the prevention of transmission of this variant, after the 1st dose. The same Indian variant has now been identified in at least 26 of the 53 countries in the World Health Organisation Europe region.

In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has reported zero further deaths, with 84 positive Covid-19 cases confirmed in the past 24 hours.

The total worldwide number of virus cases identified up to 5:00pm this evening, now stands at almost 165.64 million confirmed cases, with global deaths at well over 3.43 million.
