The body of a male, understood to be in his mid-50s, was recovered yesterday morning from a popular recreational area on the Tipperary side of the Shannon river.
The alarm was first raised when a passer-by became concerned having observed a motor vehicle parked close to the Ballina Slipway, in Co. Tipperary, at around 11.30am yesterday.
The emergency services, including an ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit, the Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard, Gardaí and members of the Killaloe fire service were alerted and responded to the scene, where they located a body floating approximately one kilometre from the town.
Despite the river being in fast-flow, the man’s body remained close to the shore and was quickly recovered by Coast Guard volunteers and the fire service personnel but alas was pronounced dead at the scene.
While Garda across the river in Killaloe have launched an investigation, they are understood to believe the death was a personal tragedy. The man’s body was taken by hearse to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) where a post mortem will now be carried out.
