Two men are understood to have been arrested for obstruction, following Gardaí searches carried out in Co. Tipperary and Co. Offaly this morning. Same was part of an investigation into suspected drug dealing and other related serious crimes. Five searches in all were undertaken.
Some 50 Gardaí, which included armed officers from the Regional Support Unit, the Garda Dog Unit and the Divisional Drugs Unit, were involved as part of this operation which focussed particularly on the towns of Roscrea, Co. Tipperary and the close-by town of Birr, in Co. Offaly.
It is understood that in their search Gardaí were forced to use a Taser (Electroshock protection weapon which disrupts voluntary control of muscles) on one individual during their investigations. One other person was removed to hospital with a suspected heart attack.
Gardaí confirm that these raids were planned in advance of last Monday’s nationally highlighted local Drug’s meeting held in Roscrea, where more than 1,150 people came together to discuss the growing problems of drug dealing and possible associated youth suicide in this area.
The men arrested have since been released.
