Three people, two of which were Gardaí, have been injured and taken to hospital after a patrol car was rammed in a head-on collision this afternoon on the Mountrath road, outside Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
It is understood that none of the injuries sustained are thought to be life-threatening and two of those injured included a female and a male member of the Gardaí.
The Garda car was struck on its driver’s side by a dark coloured BMW, which then crossed the narrow road before overturning.
This incident happened after Gardaí attempted to stop a car travelling southwards following reports of burglaries in areas of Tipperary and Cork.
It is understood that four persons, all male, were arrested in the vicinity; one at the accident scene and later three others who had taken flight through neighbouring fields and woodland.
The incident has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman for independent investigation, latter in accordance with Section 102 of the Garda Siochána Act. It is also understood that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) are represented by investigators at the scene.
