Tipperary Youth Charged With Assault Causing Harm

Following a serious assault, during which a 14-year-old boy was left critically ill with serious head injuries; this morning, at 11.30am, a 17-year-old appeared before a special sitting of Cashel District Court, charged in connection with the incident.

The assault occurred in the Lakelands area of Tipperary town, Co. Tipperary, last Thursday evening and the victim still remains in a serious condition at South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel. Prayers for his full recovery were offered at all Masses in Tipperary yesterday and today.

The 17 year-old charged in court, who cannot be named due to his age, has this morning been remanded in custody, the court having heard the details of his arrest, charge and caution. Mr Justice Terrance Finn remanded the teenager in custody to appear in court again on Thursday next, November 16th.

It is now understood that the victim, described by Gardaí as being quiet, happy and with a close circle of friends, had been targeted previously by an older youth in the area, however Gardaí were totally unaware of any such incidents, as no earlier complaints had been made to them.

A woman in her 30’s also arrested in connection with the Thursday incident was released without charge last night.

Explosives and firearms offences.
Meanwhile two men, aged 33 years and 50 years, arrested and detained on the 10th of November last at an address in Abbey Street, Cahir, Co. Tipperary by Gardaí from the Special Detective Unit; were also expected to appear before Cashel District Court today. The men were arrested in connection with explosives and firearms offences, involving organised crime in the county.  Both men were remanded in custody, to come before Cashel District Court on Wednesday, November 15th 2017 next.
